Already Planning for 2010
Hard to believe, but we begin planning the HOW Conference program literally a week or two after we return from the event every summer. So early in July, our HOW edit/design team began researching and brainstorming to concoct the perfect agenda for Denver. Who's on the list? Well, we can't reveal any names just yet (mostly because we haven't yet extended invitations). But I'm super psyched about the closing keynote, a HUGE HOW favorite who's agreed to make a repeat appearance after several years. (Nope, not telling!)

Just ... wow. What can I say, folks? It was amazing. One of the top two of all my HOW Conference experiences, maybe even No. 1. The energy? Intense. The vibe? Fun. The level of connection? High. You were great fun to spend four days with. Thanks for being there! We'll have more info coming soon about PDFs, MP3s, webinars and more. Meantime, become a fan of the HOW Conference Facebook page, where you can post video and photos, share notes and stay connected. See you in Denver next year!

Ready to go Airline ticket: check. Hotel confirmation number: check. Notes and introductions: check. Toiletries in a 1qt. bag: check. We're heading to Austin tomorrow, and I'll be tweeting live during the conference this week. Follow the action on Twitter at @HOWmag or search for #HOWConf. My colleague, Megan Patrick, will be covering the conference over on the HOW Blog. And check back here next Monday for a recap and links to Flickr pages and other design blogs.

Last call for extras in Austin Conference vet Brad Dressler, who's organizing a slew of extra activities next week, sends along a couple of reminders: * In-house designers: RSVP by Sunday night if you'd like to join the lunch outing at noon on Friday the 26th. Brad needs to make final reservations with the restaurant on Monday. * Interested in the post-closing-reception gay bar crawl of Austin hotspots? If so, e-mail your contact info to braddressler at tamu dot edu. The group is planning to meet in the Hilton lobby between 10:50 and 11:00 p.m. on Friday. * Last but not least: Join HOW Conference Twibe to keep up with tweets during and after the conference.

Time to get packing Less than a week to go before we get on an airplane and jet to the Conference, and one of my last-minute tasks is to make a list of what to pack. (Yes, I'm an unapologetic list-maker.) Aside from the usual clothing and stuff, here's what's on my list: * Business cards. Newly printed, in fact, with updated contact info. Sadly, they're corporate-issued cards and not very sexy, but they do the job. * My conference directory. You'll get your own copy in Austin; it'll be your essential guide to EVERYTHING that's going on. * My copy of "Buying In," opening keynoter Rob Walker's book, to finish on the plane. * Airborne, vitamins and sensible snacks to keep me healthy and energized during these 18-hour-plus days.

Just killin' time You know that weird lull before a party you're hosting? When you've done all the cooking and set out the snacks and appetizers, when the bar is stocked, you've poured yourself a glass, and you're just waiting for the first guests to ring the doorbell? Yeah ... that's pretty much our week. We're just ready to get the party started.

More after-hours fun We recommend that you start conserving energy now ... days at the Conference will be long. Very long. You'll start with breakfast and a quick tour of the Resource Center at 8 a.m., then sessions all day, then lots of stuff to do in the evening. And then there's the late night fun. Get scoop on some after-hours play that several Forum folks are planning. Plus, we got word from conference vet Brad Dressler about a gay bar crawl he's organizing after the Friday night reception. Meet up with Brad after the party in the Hilton lobby between 10:50 and 11:00. Brad says the Rainbow Cattle Company is a must-see. Find more details and get Brad's contact information here.

In-House Designers: You're invited for lunch Conference veteran Brad Dressler has organized a lunch outing for in-house designers attending the conference. The group is meeting at noon (sharp!) on Friday; Brad has arranged a buffet lunch at a nearby Tex-Mex spot. Bring a sample of work you're proud of to share, and come ready to make connections with other in-house designers like you that'll last beyond the conference. Find more details (and RSVP) here. Check it out now if you're interested; the group is limited to 50 people. And thanks to Brad for organizing!

Getting ready In just 45 minutes, the HOW conference team will gather for our pre-conference meeting to review all the last-minute details, confirm our travel plans, look over the floorplan and hash out who's doing what, when and where. For me, this annual meeting always serves as a wake-up call that the conference is just a few short days away, and it helps all of us really get our heads in the game. I'm actually looking forward to this meeting!

About the big party ... So, the theme for the closing party Friday night is "Keep Austin Weird." What's that mean? Well, pretty much anything goes. You could go all-out and totally funkify your wardrobe (plenty of places in Austin to shop if you go that route). Or you could rock a pair of cowboy boots. Or dress like an indie musician. Me, I'm planning to wear my "Aus10tayshus" T-shirt that Steve Gordon designed, jeans and a pair of sweet black-and-red boots. Whatever you choose, you'll look awesome.
